Take a stroll in the crisp winter weather and read a fun story at the same time! These books will be on display through mid-February.

At Pat & Clint Mauk’s Prairie is Over and Under the Snow, written by Kate Messner and illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal.

As a family cross-country skis through the woods, readers are engaged in exploring and learning about the “subnivean zone” (the space between the colder snow and the warmer ground) where many animals live in the winter.

The story trail’s extended learning opportunity, located at the end of the path, is a handout where kids can cut out and place the animals from the story either over or under the snowy landscape provided.

At Dr. Robert L. Nehls Memorial Nature Preserve is In the Snow: Who’s Been Here?, written and illustrated by Lindsay Barrett George.

As two children hike through the snow, signs of animal life are everywhere.

The reader is invited to help them find clues — a pellet of feathers and bones, a patch of bark rubbed off the trunk of a birch tree, and more — and join in guessing, “Who’s been here?”
