Located in Catawba Island Township, this 12-acre property is situated directly on Lake Erie’s West Harbor waterfront and includes a broad marsh and a quarter mile of shoreline. This preserve is one of two strategic pieces of conservation land on Catawba Island that were purchased by the Black Swamp Conservancy through a grant from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund. The other property, Quinstock Woods Preserve, contains more than 19 acres of mature hardwood forest and will be retained by the Conservancy for migratory bird and wildlife habitat.
West Harbor Preserve has been donated to the Park District of Ottawa County and holds the honor of being the first park area owned by PDOC. It will be the future site of a park maintenance facility and will include a kayak launch, walking trails, a parking area, and habitat restoration projects.
This preserve is currently not open to the public, but will become a public preserve in the future. To follow the progress and planning of the park, please visit PDOC’s website.
