Located at the far eastern tip of Middle Bass Island, just across the water from Canada, Middle Bass Island East Point Preserve protects one of the island’s last remaining natural shorelines. Once part of a privately owned estate that included a golf course and manor, this 7.8-acre property has been carefully restored and preserved as a refuge for native plants and wildlife.
Today, the preserve features a mix of wooded habitat and open shoreline, where hackberry and walnut trees provide food and shelter for more than 120 species of migratory birds. As one of the last landfalls before crossing Lake Erie, the site serves as a critical stopover for birds traveling between breeding and wintering grounds.
Protected through a partnership between the Put-in-Bay Township Park District, Lake Erie Islands Conservancy, and Black Swamp Conservancy, the preserve reflects a successful effort to halt development and conserve rare island habitat. Ongoing stewardship — including trail care, habitat restoration, and native plantings — has been shaped by the dedication of the Helman family, whose long-term commitment helped transform the property into a lasting sanctuary.
Accessible only by water, the preserve is part of the Middle Bass Island and Lake Erie Islands Water Trails, offering a quiet, remote experience where visitors can encounter the natural beauty and ecological importance of Ohio’s Lake Erie islands.
