Summer 2022 Story Walk

June 15, 2022 - September 15, 2022

Turn a walk into storytime at Pat & Clink Mauk’s Prairie on the Conservancy’s homestead property. Our permanent story trail features rotating titles throughout the season, so you can read and learn as you stroll!

Each month, StoryWalk will feature a different book about the natural world and accompanying extended learning opportunities. Stories will show the value of land that is preserved for the benefit of everyone and encourage exploration with information about animals that might be nearby, or native plants that may be found. We’ll also hold a monthly drawing from the visitor sign-in sheets for a copy of the featured book!

Parents and teachers are invited to bring children of all ages to enjoy the trail from dawn to dusk. Click the image to download a printable copy of the poster!

Upcoming titles include:

June 15th – On Meadowview Street
by Henry Cole
Caroline moves to a new suburban house where her new yard is a perfectly manicured lawn. But all that changes when she discovers a wildflower. Soon she’s got her own little wildflower preserve, carefully protected from Dad’s lawn mower. She adds a tree, a pond, and birdhouses, and she’s brought a meadow to Meadowview Street! As the neighbors see how beautiful and alive a yard can be, more meadows pop up in the neighborhood! Caroline’s story is sure to inspire the creation of green corridors—safe havens for migrating birds and butterflies—in our communities and neighborhoods.

July 15th – The Hike
by Alison Farrell
Join three friends on their hike and share their tribulations and triumphs in the great outdoors. Here is the best and worst of any hike: from picnics to puffing and panting, deer-sighting to detours. Throughout the story, you’ll enjoy the sketchbook made by one of the hikers as she records the sights and experiences of “the hike.”

August 15th – Finding Wild
written by Megan Wagner; illustrated by Abigail Halpin
In search of the wild, the book’s characters adventure away from the city and into the woods where they discover the beauty of the natural world. As the children make their way back to the paved and noisy streets, they unexpectedly discover that the wild is also right in their own backyard! There are so many places that wild can exist, if only you know where to look!

Pat & Clint Mauk’s Prairie is at 4825 Sugar Ridge Road in Pemberville, Ohio. The one-mile public walk is on mown paths, accessible to people using strollers or wheelchairs. StoryWalk was made possible by Seed-To-The-Sower, a donor-advised fund of the Greater Toledo Community Foundation. No registration is needed and there is no cost to walk the trail.
